What is Wellness?

One of my favorite websites is dictionary.com, and they describe “Wellness” as:

noun

  1. the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.
  2. an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

Um… seriously?

Yes, I am a nerd who loves to look up words. For me, this brings me joy, contentment, satisfaction, delight, glee, fulfillment…ok, I think you get the picture. In fact, in elementary school, I once ordered a thesaurus through the Troll book order. I still have it – btw!

It was a great day when your teacher sent home one of these!

Wellness is all about who you ask

Wellness these days has been linked to many different determinations depending on who you’re asking. Oftentimes, “wellness” is associated with fitness or mental health. These are absolutely two ways in which it’s relevant, but they’re far from the only ones.

Wellness is what you decide

Because it relies so heavily on your personal opinion of what feels good, no one person can proclaim a blanket definition. There are those of you who need time alone to recharge. There are those of you who thrive amongst others. What the ambiguous term means for one can be just the opposite for someone else.

What does is mean here?

This place is meant to inspire and inform. This page specifically, is home to all things that bring joy. A feeling of joy, peace, happiness, contentment – these are all characteristics of wellness in how I define it, so here is where to find articles ranging from running to napping, eating dessert to intermittent fasting, partying to meditation and so-on. Embracing our multifaceted selves and loving each and every little thing that makes us who we are is, in my opinion, wellness embodied.
